DAY 1 - OFF TO THE RAINFOREST - (L,D)

Meet & Greet on arrival at Belize International Airport and transfer by road to the Orange Walk District. Here you will board the boat for the river cruise, following the ancient Maya trade route, up the winding New River to the beautifully situated Lamanai Outpost Lodge. En route the flourishing lowland jungle gives visitors a taste of the multitude and diversity of the natural wonders that are Belize!!

Cabana Outside Open Air Dining The Main Lodge

Time to relax and settle in at the Lodge before a delicious Dinner followed by Lamanai's famous "Spotlight Safari" which offers visitors the opportunity to see nocturnal wildlife up-close and personal from the comfort and safety of a custom-built safari river boat. Designed with special seating the riverboat provides each participant with an unobstructed view of nature's wonders of the night. You will experience the sights and sounds of the lagoon's night life, both with and without the spotlight. Wildlife may include: Morelet's Crocodiles, Yucatan Nightjar, Common Potoo, arboreal porcupine and even some of the native cats.

Return to the Lodge for a peaceful night's sleep, except for possible interruption by the sounds of the jungle...frogs, howler monkeys and the like.

DAY 2 - MAYAN TEMPLES & EXOTIC WILDLIFE - (B,L,D)

Coffee is served from 6.00 am for early risers. After a full breakfast your guide will take you down to the lagoon for the short boat trip to visit the nearby ruins of the Ancient Maya City of Lamanai, which can be glimpsed from the lodge's restaurant. You will explore the mysterious jungle-shrouded temples of Lamanai with one of the excellent guides, well-versed in the history and culture of this fascinating civilisation. You will learn about the history of such structures as the "mask" temple, the "jaguar" temple, and the Lord Smoking Shell stela.

The Lamanai Archaeological Reserve is a major site with excavations still underway. The informative and helpful guides will help to give an insight into Maya archaeology and to one of the New World's most outstanding civilisations. The Jungle Walk around the ruins takes you along paths where you can view the Howler Monkeys screaming in the high jungle canopy.

After lunch you can simply relax on the deck with a drink and enjoy the spectacular view or take a nap.

Mid afternoon you will be taken on the Herbal Medicine Walk with the Maya naturalist guide. This is a wonderful way to learn to identify plants growing in the jungle. During this walk an explanation is made of the uses of a wide variety of natural ingredients.

Red Ginger Water Hyacinth Lobster Claw Heliconia

Tropical forest plants hold the key to unlocking the secret of how to wipe out almost any ailment. These chemicals - called secondary compounds - are often produced by the plant as protection against insects and other herbivores. Many modern drugs (aspirin for example) come from these compounds, but most plants have not been investigated by scientists for their effects on disease. On the other hand, the medicinal properties of local plants are well-known to indigenous peoples and you will gain some of this insight on this fascinating tour.

At the end of a day full of adventure, you may wish to wind down and take a swim from the dock. You can relax in one of the dock's many reclined chairs and ponder the endless expanses of the universe clearly visible above you. There is also find a reference library and lounge area to relax with a cold drink before dinner.

DAY 3 - RELAXING IN THE RAINFOREST - (B,L,D)

For those who can drag themselves out of their comfy beds, today begins early with a Pre-dawn Canoe Trip across the lagoon and up Dawson Creek to experience the early morning mists, sunrise and the awakening of the marsh birds.

Paddle among the lily pads, watch for iguana in the overhanging trees.

You may find yourselves surrounded by various egrets and herons, Northern Jacanas, Limpkins, Rufous-browed Peppershrikes, and often the elusive Black Catbird, a species considered near-threatened by BirdLife International. Peace and tranquility.

Return to the Lodge for a tasty breakfast. The open air restaurant and bar afford panoramic views of the New River Lagoon and the ever-changing garden. The highly praised daily menu is a blend of Belizean and North American cuisine featuring tropical fruits, vegetables, and other locally grown products.

Most of the day is free to relax in the rainforest. Anyone feeling energetic can paddle around the lagoon in one of the canoes that are free for guests to use.

The Bar The Dock Hammock

Late afternoon you will be treated to a Sunset Cruise which is one of the most amazingly relaxing ways to enjoy the end of the day in the tropics.

Two hours of serenity, a well stocked cooler, floating on the calm waters of the New River Lagoon as the sun sinks beyond the western shore, with the palm trees silhouetted. Then the spectacular night sky comes alive with millions of stars in the unpolluted Belizean sky.

After a tasty dinner, and perhaps a drink in the bar before returning to your comfortable cabana for another "peaceful" night's rest in the heart of nature.

"La Isla Bonita" - The Beautiful Island
