DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN BELIZE - (D)
Meet and Greet" on arrival in Belize and transfer up the Western Highway to the beautiful rainforest area of San Ignacio near the Guatemalan border with a stop along the way at the small and informal Belize Zoo. Accommodation is at the Cahal Pech Village conveniently situated high above the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena and offering incredible views of the surrounding countryside. The village is set in lush tropical gardens with many exotic plants and trees. Each fully screened, thatched roof Cabana is named after a Mayan ruin. All are made from local Belizean hardwoods. The flooring and interior are varnished and all materials are woven, bright coloured Mayan fabrics. Each cabana has 2 Double Beds, Private Bathroom with Hot and Cold water, Ceiling Fan, Cable TV, Writing Table and Chair. Outside is a Private Veranda with Deck Chairs and a Hammock to relax in. |
DAY 2 - IN SEARCH OF THE PAST... (B,L,D)
Whilst Europe was deep in the "Dark Ages", the inhospitable and hostile jungles of Central America were being transformed into the home of one of the World's great civilisations. Temples, Pyramids and Palaces were built by peasant farmers and slaves without the benefit of beasts of burden or even the wheel. These were painted in the sacred colours of the Maya; red, blue, yellow and green and were ruled over by immensely powerful Kings who were regarded as living Gods by their subjects. Today you will explore the realms of the mysterious Maya people. Your exciting day trip starts with a ride to the nearby village of San José Succotz. There you will cross the Mopan River by a nineteenth century, hand cranked ferry to the Mayan site of Xunantunich which is spectacularly perched on a hill overlooking the Belize River. Xunantunich, meaning "stone woman" in Mayan, has a commanding view of the entire upper Belize River valley. The largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises a towering 130 feet above the main plaza, and more than 250 feet above the river valley below. This main temple is visible from all parts of the valley today. Time to explore and climb the ruins which are great for panoramic photographs - the views from the top are incredible!! "This site also demonstrates one of the great dangers of archaeology, not to life and limb, although that does sometimes take place, I'm talking about folklore!" Indiana Jones Next you will have the chance to try out the most exciting mode of river transportation - Tube Floating down the Mopan River to Clarissa Falls. You will see iguanas sunning themselves on the overhanging branches along the river banks and the tropical birds which populate the treetops. Maya villagers still bathe and wash their clothes in the river, giving you a glimpse of real life in this part of the world. The transportation will be waiting to take you back to the hotel for lunch. Note This is a very relaxing experience but if you prefer you can opt to return direct to the hotel by road from Xunantunich. |
This afternoon you will explore a small but fascinating Maya Ceremonial Centre and visit the tiny Museum. Situated on the hills above San Ignacio, right next door to the hotel, is Cahal Pech - once the home to a Maya Royal Family.
The central acropolis is approximately 900 feet above sea level. There are 34 structures in a two acre area, the tallest of which is a temple that rises 77 feet into the air. Many of the buildings are Palaces, or Elite Residences, situated around seven courtyards. There are also two ball courts, five stelae, one altar, and one structure that may have served as a sweat house. Several jade objects, obsidian blades, shell and bone ornaments and pottery vessels were found in a Royal Tomb, the most interesting of which is a mosaic mask made up of jade and shell that was part of the belt worn by the entombed. |
DAY 3 - TIKAL, GUATEMALA - (B,L,D)
Today you will cross over the Guatemalan border for a two day visit to the Tikal National Park in the Peten region. Hidden for 1,000 years in the midst of rainforests teeming with wildlife are enormous ceremonial cities with magnificent Temples and Pyramids built by the mysterious Mayan people. TIKAL is the most fabulous site of them all! Of the park's 222 square miles only 10 square miles of central Tikal has been mapped and over 3,000 separate buildings have been revealed: temples, shrines, ceremonial platforms, residences, ball courts, terraces, causeways and plazas. Overnight at the Jungle Lodge Hotel situated within the Tikal National Park. Imagine the ceremonies where human sacrifices were offered to the Gods. Listen carefully and you will hear the still-beating heart of a dying Civilisation . . . "What are you trying to do, scare me? You sound like my mother!" Indiana Jones |
DAY 4 - LAKE PETEN ITZA, FLORES, GUATEMALA - (B,L,D)
The adventurous (that's you!) can get up early to watch the sun rise from the top of Temple IV. There will be time for some more exploring (maybe "El Mundo Perdido" - "The Lost World") before being driven to the island of Flores on Lake Peten Itza. After lunch on the shores of the lagoon there will be time for shopping for Guatemalan goodies before crossing the border back to Belize and another overnight at Cahal Pech Village. |
DAY 5 - THE REAL JUNGLE ADVENTURE BEGINS... (B,L,D)
Today you will set off on the highlight of this tour - an OVERNIGHT JUNGLE CAMP:-
"You're gonna get killed chasing after your damn fortune and glory! Willie Scott "Maybe. But not today!" Indiana Jones This fascinating adventure is everything you ever wanted in the jungle and is expertly run by first class guides who have been trained (ex-British Army) and certified in the areas of first aid, cave rescue, jungle survival, natural history and archeology. The field operations team will ensure a fun, educational and safe adventure experience. Because our guides possess a local knowledge that is unmatched, their expertise has earned them the privilege to lead groups into rare protected territories and reserves that other tour companies aren't permitted to. The tour will be adapted to your own physical capabilities. This is jungle fun - not jungle training!!! |
DAY 6 - MORE FUN IN THE JUNGLE & RETURN TO CIVILISATION- (B, L,D)
Another day of exploration and fun as you continue exploring the rainforest area before returning to your comfortable cabana at Cahal Pech village for a hot shower, change of clothes and time to relax on your balcony with a nice cup of tea - or a stiff drink! CLIENT COMMENT:   "We have just come back from the most fantastic two days in the jungle and have to tell you all about it. You have to recommend this to all adventurers as the most exciting trip out . We have been in the company of exceptionally intelligent, helpful and passionate people who have answered all of my over intensive questions and have also fired our thirst for caving and adventure trips. I cannot say enough to emphasise how much we have enjoyed it." Elaine and Martin Hume (Sent via e-mail from the hotel the moment they returned from the rainforest!) |
DAY 7 - END OF THE ADVENTURE / TIME FOR SOME "R & R" - (B)
Today it is time to say goodbye to the rainforests of Western Belize. You will be transferred by road to the International Airport if you are departing Belize or the Municipal Airport if you are continuing with another destinaton in Belize. If you have a little more time to spare, why not consider one of our excellent island dive, snorkel or relax packages in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye or on the southern coast of Belize in Placencia? CLIENT COMMENT:   " My favorite thing about the tour was that it didn't seem like a package tour at all. I was worried about being part of a herd of people trooping around, but instead it seemed like independent travel with flawless logistics. :) Wonderful--and just what we wanted! Thanks again for all of your help. ." Julie and Dan McFadyen |
